A Study of the Emotional Reactions and Attitudes of Mothers to Hospitalization of Children


Abstract
One hundred twenty-one mothers whose child were hospitalized at Seoul National University Hospital during the period from April 1 to October 31, 1975 were inter¡þviewed as subjects to study the emotional reactions and attitudes of others to hospitalization of children.
The results of this study reviewed in a statistical analysis of the percentile Chi Square-test and Analysis of Variance to obtain the following findings:
1). Most of the interviewed mothers had experienced feeling of anxiety and fear (72.92%).
2) As reasons for anxiety and fear, "About recovery of child, from present illness and future health" was ranked first with the rate of 29.29%.
To reduce anxiety and fear, "with Dr present" was rankeda first with the rate of 54.68%. "with nurses present" was 19.53% only.
2) Mother¢¥s comments about child¢¥s new behavior after hospitalization, "Yes" was 66.12%.

3) Among mothers had had regular menstruation, 28.89% had changed menstrual cycle and duration.
4) Emotional reactions of mothers to the child¢¥s hospitalization were without stati¡þstically any significant difference by mother¢¥s former experience of hospitalization, occupation; religion and level of education.
Put there was significant, difference at 5 percent level between age.
5) Emotional reactions of. mothers to the child¢¥s hospitalization without statistically
any significant difference by child¢¥s age, birth order, diagnosis, vaccination and
frequency of hospitalization.

But there was significant difference at 5 percent level between sex of child.

6) Mother¢¥s attitudes to the child were without statistically any significant, difference mother¢¥s age, residence, occupation, level of education and diagnosis of child

But there was significant difference at 5 percent level between frequency of child¢¥s hospitalization between mother¢¥s religion.
7) Mother¢¥s attitudes to the child were without statistically any significant difference by mother¢¥s age, residence occupation, religion, level Y any significant difference diagnosis and frequency of hospitalization of child.
